Élisabeth
Discover the world of Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. Appointed to the court of Louis XIV as a young woman, Jacquet de la Guerre's vibrant and fiercely original output included ballets, chamber music, cantatas, solo works for harpsichord and opera. She was widely considered in her time to be one of Versailles’ most formidable composers, improvisers and performers.
In this unmissable event, dynamic Baroque collective HIP Company bring these masterpieces to life, against a stunning backdrop of original choreography by acclaimed French ballerina, Claire Voss.

Élisabeth - Students’ Open Rehearsal
In the lead-up to our Élisabeth concerts, HIP Company is pleased to invite secondary and tertiary music and dance students to a free open rehearsal and Q&A with the artists, made possible by the support of the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries in Western Australia.
The session, from 6.30-8.30pm, incorporates observing a rehearsal from 6.30-8.00pm, with a Q&A session to follow.
Doors open at 6.15pm, and seating is unreserved.
With Darkness Deep
Come in from the cold as HIP Company returns to the serene surrounds of St Andrew's Church to present a programme of Baroque delights by composers such as Handel, Matthew Locke and master of English song, Henry Purcell. This reverie on dreams, rest and the magic of night-time will be sure to warm the soul.

Semele
Humanity and the Divine collide in Semele, the Australian premiere of John Eccles' opera of 1706, edited by Richard Platt and performed in semi-staged concert by innovative Baroque music collective, HIP Company.
Semele tells of the doomed love affair between the God Jupiter and the mortal Semele who seeks immortality, but will her ambition be rewarded or punished? Deception, disguise, desperation, and dragons abound in this exemplar from an underrated composer of the refined, yet virtuosic style of English opera of the time.
With artistic direction by Bonnie de la Hunty (soprano), Sarah Papadopoulos (violinist) and Krista Low (cellist) and an orchestra and cast of Perth's finest exponents of Baroque music led by Concertmaster Shaun Lee-Chen (appearing courtesy of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra), Semele will delight both Baroque music connoisseurs and newcomers alike.
The performance lasts for 140 minutes including an interval, during which complimentary light refreshments sponsored by award-winning Margaret River winery, Victory Point Wines, will be served.

Rendez-Vous: in collaboration with The Marais Project
Nothing compares to the splendour of Paris during the reign of King Louis XIV. An absolute monarch, Louis loved the arts and spent an enormous amount of money surrounding himself with the best musicians, painters, and architects. He assembled the greatest orchestra in Europe, commissioned operas and even danced in ballets for his courtiers to admire. His palace and gardens at Versailles still attract hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Louis was 1970s Glam Rock on steroids! But the music of this time was also delicate, thoughtful, and even spiritual. It can take your breath away…
Rendez-vous is a cross-continent collaboration between HIP Company and Sydney’s The Marais Project, widely acknowledged experts in French music. Together, the two ensembles bring a new energy and a fresh eye to the French Baroque, in the beautiful artist-run Peach Black Gallery.
The programme includes music by Couperin, Marais, Boutellier, the enigmatic Sainte-Colombe, and the composer with the most wonderful name ever, Michel Pignolet de Montéclair!

Baroque Favourites
HIP Company presents an evening of exquisite works from the Baroque era for soprano and strings, the culmination of a week-long residency at Lost Eden Creative, Dwellingup.

A Tale of Two Cities: Music from Baroque Rome to Venice
Join us for an evening of inspiring early music in the beautiful chapel of St George's College.
Presented by St George's College Music in collaboration with Artistic Director Stewart Smith, this concert will feature performances by the St George's College Consort alongside guest artists from HIP Company including Shaun Lee Chen (Violin), Sarah Papadopoulos (Violin), Krista Low (Viola da Gamba), and Bonnie de la Hunty (Soprano).
With works by Valentini, Quagliatti, Monteverdi, Corelli, and others, this promises to be a remarkable evening. There are two evening concerts, at 5.30-6.30 and 7.30-8.30pm, with a sparkling reception to follow after the latter.

Meeting Place
On the 19th November for the 2021 Fremantle Biennale, HIP Company will present ‘Meeting Place’, a concert of Early Music inspired by the theme of Crossings. Set in Fremantle’s heritage-listed The Naval Store, the group’s signature style of Historically Informed Performance practice will allow a crossing between past and present.
European Baroque music, including songs, opera arias and instrumental chamber music, will be heard alongside music traditionally belonging to this land, that of the Whadjuk Noongar people, including traditional chants and two songs about Miago, a Noongar man on board the HMS Beagle in 1837-38, recently researched and reconstructed by Clint Bracknell.
'Meeting Place' represents a crossing of two cultures and their depictions of sea and river voyages, homes and foreign lands, isolation and connection, life and death.

Bach Together Again
HIP Company celebrates their first birthday with the music of the master, Johann Sebastian Bach, featuring the exquisite cantata, Ich habe genug, BWV 82a.

HIP Company, formerly St Andrew’s Baroque, is proud to present their official launch concert in the beautiful Government House Ballroom this August. The event is made possible by the Honourable Governor Kim Beazley’s ‘Restart the Arts’ initiative.
