Meeting Place

  • The Naval Store Cnr Queen Victoria St and Canning Hwy Fremantle, WA Australia (map)

On the 19th November for the 2021 Fremantle Biennale, HIP Company will present ‘Meeting Place’, a concert of Early Music inspired by the theme of Crossings. Set in Fremantle’s heritage-listed The Naval Store, the group’s signature style of Historically Informed Performance practice will allow a crossing between past and present.

European Baroque music, including songs, opera arias and instrumental chamber music, will be heard alongside music traditionally belonging to this land, that of the Whadjuk Noongar people, including traditional chants and two songs about Miago, a Noongar man on board the HMS Beagle in 1837-38, recently researched and reconstructed by Clint Bracknell.

‘Meeting Place' represents a crossing of two cultures and their depictions of sea and river voyages, homes and foreign lands, isolation and connection, life and death.
